2009 Ohio Museums Association's
Award of Achievement Winners

Best Exhibition

Supreme Court of Ohio Visitor Education Center -- "Identity on Trial"

With the popularity of television programs like CSI and Law and Order, this timely exhibit drew on popular culture references as well as real-life scenarios.  Identity on Trial was a fascinating exploration of the use of scientific evidence in courtroom trials.  The focus on the intersection between science, the law, and criminal investigations created a highly appealing and information educational experience that opened up the potential for interesting dialogue at all levels of learning.  This exhibit’s content was provocative, highly engaging, and produced a significant learning experience for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

Best Community Collaboration or Partnership

Summit County Historical Society -- “John Brown in Akron: A 150th Anniversary Commemoration”

John Brown in Akron brought to life one of the key figures in American history, along with the historical events associated with his life and death.  With the support of the mayor and other community leaders, the organizers created an astonishingly broad collaboration that involved historical societies, public libraries, the zoo, the symphony orchestra, a museum, the Urban League, a university, churches, and public schools. Encompassing these numerous Akron partners and a diverse array of organizations, the Summit County Historical Society truly developed a city-wide celebration with a city-wide impact.

Best Community Collaboration or Partnership

Columbus Museum of Art and COSI Columbus -- “Egypt In Columbus”

By combining the forces of the Columbus Museum of Art and COSI and by partnering with six public libraries, Egypt In Columbus was able to reach hundreds of thousands of people and introduced new audiences to both the museums and the Egyptian culture. The hands-on, interactive materials were highly imaginative and beautifully designed to invite direct participation from audiences of all ages and backgrounds.  Materials were made accessible through a variety of methods, including printed materials, guide tours, lectures, and a website.  By bring artifacts from the Ancient world to an area of the country that might not usually have the opportunity to experience such cultural treasures, this project had a positive effective on the regional economy and created a meaningful collaboration that brought many different aspects of the community together.

Best Education or Outreach

Owens Community College, Walter E. Terhune Gallery -- “Terrific Teens”

Terrific Teens is an exemplary project that directly involved teenagers from the community in the hands-on production of an exhibition.  This exhibition concerned topics of inherent interest to teens and encouraged them to rethink their relationship to society and how other teenagers experienced events in past decades.  Topics were selected by the teens themselves, and they were given responsibility for producing all aspects of the exhibition, including educational and interpretative materials. By introducing students to museum work, as well as to the importance of archiving history through the development of a post-secondary course in oral histories, this project was at the very heart of what museums aim to achieve in reaching young audiences.

  • How has the project benefited the public? Judges Favor projects with ambitious outreach over those that are intended mainly to benefit the members of an organization.
