What is Mediated Learning?
Mediated Learning is a major function of the work of science centers, zoos, nature centers, art galleries, arboreta, and other museums. The process includes creating a responsive structure within the learning environment that is truly responsive to the needs of the individual learner.  Mediated learning experiences often refers to the need for learning processes to be developed indirectly through mediators—such as tools, signs, and the people who wield them.  Mediated learning acknowledges that learning is not just knowledge acquisition and social interaction, but also knowledge creation. 

This workshop will use a wide array of methods and activities to define mediation in theory; define mediation in practice; observe mediation on the floor of a museum; present findings from a research study using three forms of mediation; and explore challenges and opportunities for mediation in our settings.  The outcome of the meeting will be our own interpretation of best practices for mediated learning.
