Do One Thing for Disaster Preparedness

Continuing in the tradition established by SAA and Heritage Preservation, the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (FAIC) encourages libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and preservation organizations to set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay. This MayDay 2018, OMA is doing our part to help make sure your institution is prepared!

For MayDay, OMA will once again be flooding our social media with posts and tweets sharing disaster preparedness  and recovery resources and tips, details on organizations that are able to help before, during and after a disaster, and other information to help your museum be prepared if the worst happens.

MayDay on May 1 is the perfect time to “do one thing” (or many things) to help prepare your institution for disasters and emergency situations.

It’s easy to take part in MayDay! Previous year’s participants held fire safety sessions, inventoried emergency supply kits, and created and updated disaster plans. These few examples are just the tip of the iceberg — there are so many ways you can participate, and we want to hear what you are doing at your institution! Send an email to [email protected] and tell us what disaster planning efforts you are taking at your museum.

We also encourage you to post your MayDay efforts, ideas and questions on OMA’s Facebook wall, Twitter and Instagram. Be sure to follow #MayDayOhio and #MayDayPrep on social media, and use the hashtags for all your MayDay posts – especially on Tuesday, May 1!

FAIC has once again teamed up with Gaylord Archival to offer exciting incentives for organizations who participate in MayDay 2018.

Submit your preparedness activities to FAIC using this online submission form. FAIC be accepting submissions through May 31, 2018, so make sure that you share your activities  before then! On June 1, 2018 FAIC will pick six institutions who will receive prizes.

After Tuesday’s MayDay social media blitz, be sure to check back on the OMA blog to explore our MayDay Resources page.

Keep watching OMA’s social media pages for more MayDay information and inspiration. Best of luck in your MayDay activities! Let’s all do our part on May 1, 2018 to Do One Thing for Disaster Preparedness!
