A new Congress convenes in 2019, facing an enormous list of timely policy debates, including support for museums. Together as a field we’ve defeated several threats to eliminate or de-fund federal agencies supporting museums, but we must keep making our case. Beyond federal funding, museums are also significantly impacted by tax reform, education policy, infrastructure legislation, and more. Legislators do not know how museums are impacted if they don’t hear directly from you—the museums and people they represent.

Museums Advocacy Day is a unique opportunity to join with other museum professionals and supporters to make the case for museums. Here are a few reasons to plan to attend:

  • Constituents are the best advocates. In fact, polling from the Congressional Management Foundation confirms that constituent visits still have more impact on legislators than any other influence group or strategy. It’s up to every museum supporter to make the case to Congress and tell their story. Your constituency is your advocacy super-power!
  • Museums Advocacy Day is inspiring, energizing and practical. Unite with others from the museum field as one voice to reaffirm our value, collective contributions, and aspirations. Get the information and insights needed to speak up for museums.
  • Museums Advocacy Day is a unique opportunity to network with peers from your region, hear from federal agency and nonprofit leaders and build your own professional skills. Gain advocacy strategies and techniques you can use on Capitol Hill, with your city council and state legislators, with local and regional funders, and to advocate for yourself throughout your career.
  • Each year the robust program is updated to educate and inspire both new and returning advocates. Get timely, insider insights from policy leaders and the tools and information needed to be a successful advocate for museums on Capitol Hill. Whether you are a new or seasoned advocate, you will get all the preparation you need to effectively make the case for museums in 2019 – on Capitol Hill, and with your state and local elected officials. And you get to put the skills and insights you gain on Monday to use the very next day!
