The Ohio History Connection seeks an AmeriCorps Manager and Coordinator, Local History Services.

Through work with local history organizations, public libraries, and schools the Coordinator, Local History Services, helps create awareness of and deeper appreciation for Ohio history. This position manages and administers the Ohio History Service Corps AmeriCorps program and provides direct leadership to the local history element of the program. In addition, the position acts as an internal leader in regard to commemorating state and national anniversaries. Reports to the Department Manager of Local History Services. Regularly travel to site partners and historical organizations around the state to provide services and support and other field work opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate services and projects that support local, regional, and statewide history organizations, museums, archives, libraries, schools, and local governments by providing services that further the knowledge and appreciation of Ohio history.

  • Lead the Ohio History Connection’s Ohio History Service Corps AmeriCorps program, providing administration, grant compliance, management, host site oversight and support, and member oversight and support. Serves as primary contact for Ohio History Service Corps for ServeOhio, Ohio History Connection, and site partners.

  • Develop and coordinate a sustainable model for Local History Services to support commemorations at local organizations.

  • Represent Ohio History Connection and work collaboratively with Commemorative Committees to develop programs to support statewide tributes that increase Ohioans awareness and appreciation of Ohio’s contributions to local, state, national and world history.

  • Develop and manage budgets

  • Works with local, regional and statewide historical organizations, museums, archives, libraries and local governments to compile, organize and disseminate information about Local History Services, Ohio Local History Alliance, and local history activities occurring in Ohio, including:

    • Ohio History Connection website components

    • Electronic communications for statewide commemorative events

  • Supports activities of Local History Services as needed, including regional and annual meetings of the Alliance, consulting projects and workshops, grants program, etc.

  • Grant writing.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees the AmeriCorps program to include supervision of AmeriCorps program members and coordination of professional mentorship for members.

Education and Experience: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public history, history, museums studies, communication, or equivalent plus a minimum of three to five years’ experience working in a public history organization, college or university, or in field services. Solid understanding of Ohio history with excellent research, writing and communication skills a must. Experience leading teams of peers and/or supervising interns or volunteers preferred.

Work Environment: Normal office environment. Part of the work is performed at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, OH, but the position requires frequent travel to historical organizations to assist them with their operations. It also requires attendance at meetings, workshops, planning sessions, marker dedications, and conferences around the state. Hours will include seasonal weekend and evening work, including substantial in-state and limited out-of-state travel with occasional overnights.

Salary range: $19.24
